Insulating Rod: Characteristics and Usage in Electrical Operations

Insulating rods, also known as gram rods, brake rods, or insulating pull rods, are essential tools used for operating live equipment. They consist of three parts: a working head, an insulating rod, and a handle. These rods are primarily used for tasks such as closing or opening high-voltage isolating switches, installing and disassembling portable grounding wires, and performing operations during measurement and testing.

There are two types of insulating rods based on their combination form: interface type and telescopic type. The interface-type rods are durable and feature a butt spiral interface, while the telescopic rods are easy to operate and can be expanded or contracted according to the required length. Depending on the usage environment, these rods can be classified as ordinary or rainproof. They can be made from materials like glass, phenolic resin, or epoxy resin.

In China, insulating rods undergo a power frequency withstand voltage test once a year. The test involves adding specific voltage levels based on the equipment's voltage range, such as adding 44 kV to the voltage of 6 to 10 kV, four times the phase voltage to the voltage of 35 to 154 kV, and three times the phase voltage to the voltage of 220 kV. The test duration is 5 minutes.

Characteristics of Insulating Rods:

1. Interface-type insulated operating rods are commonly used and convenient. They feature a butt spiral interface and can be carried in sections, with a maximum length of 10 meters.

2. Telescopic high-pressure insulating rods are designed with 3-5 sections for expansion and contraction. They are lightweight, compact, and easy to carry. The telescopic design allows users to adjust the length according to the available space, overcoming the limitations of fixed-length interface-type rods.

3. Socket-type high-pressure rod interfaces have a free-edge design that prevents reversal after tightening.

4. Buckle-type connections feature integrated high-carbon steel buckles, providing a combination of good appearance, high strength, and simple operation.

Precautions when using Insulating Rods:

1. Always operate in open outdoor areas and ensure there are no flammable or explosive items nearby.

2. Wear insulating shoes and gloves to prevent electric shock accidents.

3. Properly dispose of insulating rods and avoid discarding them in the air or water to protect the environment.

4. Familiarize yourself with the structure, principles, and operating methods of insulating rods.

5. Avoid using the rods in windy conditions to ensure effective operation.

6. Clean the work area promptly after operations to prevent any safety hazards caused by leftover items or tools.

7. Regularly inspect the appearance of the rod, ensuring a smooth surface without scratches or cracks. The hollow tube should have a plugging head at the fracture, and the joints should be firmly connected without loosening or falling off.

8. Check the date of the power frequency withstand voltage test for the insulating rod, and conduct regular tests in accordance with the DL408-91 electrical industry safety work regulations. Do not use the rod beyond the specified test period, and strictly follow the principle of testing before usage.

By following these guidelines, users can safely and effectively utilize insulating rods for various electrical operations.
