Industry Knowledge

Chemical Protective Suit, PE laminated fabric with SMS back panel

The chemical hazard is the most complex and varied of all the hazards. It is estimated that more than 100,000 chemical products with very different toxicological properties are in use throughout the world. Chemical hazards are experienced in most industries, examples range from protection against particle contamination in a clean room, for electronic component manufacture, to protection against chemical warfare agents. There are various ways of defining hazardous chemicals. The level of risk is one method; the amount of chemical, exposure time, toxicity are all factors that need to be taken into account. Another common method is by classification into particles, liquids and gases. This is useful for research and development of protective textiles because each chemical phase will behave differently and so require different strategies for protection.

Chemical Protective Fabrics

Any fabric used in the manufacture of chemical protective clothing should be tested to standards EN369 and EN368. EN369 measures the permeation of chemicals, through a fabric and EN368 measures liquid repellency of a fabric.

Additional EN standards, which may be considered when selecting chemical protective suit, might include EN1149-1 Antistatic Properties, EN533 Limited Flame Spread and EN531 Flame Heat Protection of the fabric.

Standards for Chemical Protective Clothing

ASTM Standards,NFPA Standards and ISO Standards etc.

Chemical Protective Clothing Types

According to European Standards, chemical protective suit is subdivided into several levels or ‘Types’ of protection. In order to be certified as offering a particular ‘Type’ of protection the fabric’s physical and barrier properties must meet minimum performance requirements.Additionally, for protection levels of Types 3, 4 & 6, the whole suit itself must be tested for liquid barrier to a minimum of one of the whole suit ‘Type’ tests and pass a dynamic movement test.
